1: What is an e-Card?
The e-Card is an electronically produced and distributed library card that offers significant, but limited access to our resources. With an e-Card the customer may access electronic resources and place holds in the online catalog remotely. The e-Card is not available to check out materials, use the Books by Mail service, and/or reserve, access, or print from the Library's Internet workstations. A full-access library card is needed for these services.
2: Who needs an e-Card?
If you already have a Contra Costa County Library card, you do not need an e-Card. Your card number is recognized for our electronic resources and online catalog anytime. If you do not have a card and would like to use our electronic resources and online catalog before your next visit to the library, you may register for an e-Card. Due to licensing restrictions for our electronic resources, only Contra Costa County residents may sign up for an e-Card.
3: I don't live in Contra Costa County, may I still use your services?
Yes, California residents may apply for a full-access library card by visiting any one of our library locations with positive ID and proof of address. At this time, the online library e-Card application is not available to non-County residents.
4: How do I get an e-Card?
Please completely fill out the Library's e-Card application and you will immediately receive your e-Card number by email. You will then be ready to use our electronic resources and place holds in the online catalog. You will later receive a mailing that will consist of a "Welcome" brochure with your paper e-Card attached.
5: Will the e-Card expire?
The paper e-Card will be good for 3 years. After this time, you may reapply for the e-Card.
6: What if I lose my e-Card, forget my number, etc.?
If your e-Card has been lost or stolen, please report it to the Library as soon as possible. To replace a missing card, you may use the online application to receive a new e-Card number. To get a full-access library card, please come into any Contra Costa County Library location and present address verification.
7: What is a full-access library card?
A full-access library card is another way to describe the card that we offer all customers who visit a library with positive ID and proof of address. It is necessary for e-Card holders to fully register and receive a full-access library card in order to check out materials, use Books by Mail, or to use and print from the Internet PCs located in our library buildings. This also means that the electronic resources cannot be accessed from a library computer with only an e-Card.
