About the El Sobrante Library
The El Sobrante Library is located in a scenic valley east of San Pablo Bay. The library, built in 1961 and enlarged in 1975 to double its size, serves a community of 16,000 residents. Its public meeting room provides the space for local government agencies to hold their regular meetings, and is also used by many local civic groups. The Library provides a wide variety of programs for children, teens and adults, monthly book and poetry discussion groups, as well as public internet computers, WIFI, and various formats of library materials.
On Tuesday June 1, 2010 Contra Costa County Supervisor John Gioia unveiled "Earth Speaks" mural at the El Sobrante Library. The mural is the result of a collaborative effort between the Contra Costa County Library, renowned local muralist Eduardo Pineda, the Richmond High School Aqua Team, the San Pablo Watershed Neighbors Education & Restoration Society (SPAWNERS), and the Friends of the El Sobrante Library.
Under the guidance of Mr. Pineda, the Aqua Team (a program of the Earth Team Environmental Network) designed the mural to reflect the importance of conserving the environment, the pursuit of knowledge, and the power of youth. The mural adorns the Friends of the El Sobrante Library Book House located behind the library and adjacent to the SPAWNERS native plant garden.
