El Sobrante Library closed due to fire damage

The El Sobrante Library will be closed until further notice due to fire damage. A fire in the building on Tuesday, February 27 damaged parts of the roof and exterior. The fire started after the library closed for the evening and no employees or patrons were inside. There is water damage in the staff area and smoke damage throughout the building. The book collection did not sustain fire or water damage, but it will take some time to assess the full extent of the damage and the impact on library services moving forward.

“We are sad to have to close the Library in El Sobrante and disrupt services to that community,” said County Librarian Melinda Cervantes. “It is important that we have time to evaluate all the equipment and materials and ensure the building is safe for staff and the public.”

The El Sobrante Library book drop is closed. Patrons should return books to the Pinole or San Pablo branches or any other Contra Costa County Library. Holds will not be available for pickup at El Sobrante until the library reopens. Patrons with current holds on the shelf will be contacted by a library staff member to have their items moved to another location. For questions about El Sobrante Library materials and programs, please call (800) 984-4636.
