Meet your Librarian

Meet Ian Richards, Senior Community Library Manager at Walnut Creek

Ian RichardsIan Richards is the senior community library manager at the Walnut Creek Library. With Contra Costa County Library for the past nine years, Ian has also spent time working in the Orinda, Pinole, and El Sobrante branches. He says one of the best things about being a librarian is the chance to do research.

“I enjoy reading and learning about different things,” he says. “One of the best benefits about working as a librarian is that through helping patrons I learn things that I might not have thought to look up on my own.”

Before becoming a librarian, theater was Ian’s passion. He got his undergraduate degree from Southern Oregon University in theater arts. After graduation he was a stage hand and stage carpenter for the California Shakespeare Theatre and the Berkeley Repertory Theatre. He says he enjoyed the creativity of theater and working with other artists. He started as an actor in high school, but later discovered he enjoyed behind the scenes work more.

“I loved the variety of the work. Every show was different with its unique challenges and message,” he says. “Even as a stage hand I got to be creative and work to contribute to the overall production.”

With two young children at home, Ian doesn’t get to the theater much anymore, but remembers the experience fondly. Ian says he would like to retire someday and spend more time travelling and getting in shape. “People say I would be bored if I wasn't working,” he says. “I'm not sure if I agree with that, but I would like to have the chance to find out.”

Ian received his master’s degree in library and information science from San Jose State.
