Meet Julia Wiswell, Librarian at the Pittsburg and Bay Point Libraries

Julia WiswellLibrarian Julia Wiswell has spent the last year getting to know the communities she works in, Pittsburg and Bay Point. She says seeing the impact of library programs is very rewarding.

“These communities are incredibly diverse, so finding ways to engage them is a fun challenge that the creative teams at both branches really do well,” Julia says. “I love joining in on big programs like the Bay Point Mural and the Book Rich Initiative, which brings the joy of reading to underserved populations.”

With the Contra Costa County Library since January 2018, Julia decided to become a librarian after spending a lot of time in her college library. Originally planning to become a social studies teacher, she decided her passion for working with teens, digital literacy, and public service might be a better fit in a library.

“We deal with people from all walks of life and do our best to assist and support them,” she explains. “Being a librarian is a lot less about books and a lot more about people than anyone thinks.”

Julia admits the way she spends her spare time is a bit of a librarian cliché.

“I love to read and hang out with my cat, Cleocatra,” she laughs. “But I also enjoy hiking, visiting National Parks and spending time with my nephew.”

Julia received her bachelor’s degree from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and her master’s in library and information science from San Jose State University.
