Read Contra Costa

Read Contra Costa is an annual event that encourages all county residents and library users to share in the experience of reading and discussing the same book. This year's Read Contra Costa, featuring the Young Adult novel, We Are Not Free by Traci Chee. takes place from September 27 through November 9.

We Are Not Free tells the story of a tight-knit group of young Nisei, second-generation Japanese American citizens living in San Francisco’s Japantown, whose lives are irrevocably changed by the federal government's internment of people of Japanese ancestry during World War II.

Some of the exciting virtual programs planned around the novel, a National Book Award Finalist, and a Printz and Walter Honor selection, include a presentation by the author, a presentation about the Japanese American floral industry during this time period, a presentation about the arts and crafts created at the internment camps, and a book club discussion.

Check back here September 20, for details about all the program offerings and to find staff-curated reading lists centered on the theme of Chee's moving tale of friendship, community, and perseverance.
