I am very pleased to announce that the Library was recently awarded more than $3 million in grant funds to address much needed deferred maintenance projects at two county-owned library buildings. The Antioch and Pinole Libraries were awarded $2,576,800 from the California State Library's Building Forward Library Infrastructure Program. The Library will provide a required 50 percent funding match by using a combination of Measure X funding and additional grant funds from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD). The Pinole Library was also awarded $511,360 from the BAAQMD’s Clear Air Centers Program to replace their HVAC system. Combined, these grant funds will replace the HVAC systems and roofs at both locations and will also upgrade their electrical services and lighting. These important improvements will ensure the longevity of both facilities so they can continue to be enjoyed for many years to come.
The Library has also completed a two-year project to migrate to CENIC, a cost-effective, high-speed broadband network that is provided through a partnership of education and governmental institutions throughout the state. Before the migration to CENIC, the library was forced to limit the bandwidth for each PC and wi-fi user in the library, which caused slow speeds and frustration for many library users. Now there are no limitations and patrons can use library computers and wi-fi without fear of any slowdowns.
On a completely different note, I know many of you, like me, are enjoying harvesting food from your backyards. This month’s booklist is dedicated to preserving and using all of our gardens’ bounty.
