The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law in July 1990. Now, July marks Disability Pride Month, a time for celebrating the experiences and achievements of this community.
The library is offering two events to celebrate Disability Pride Month. On July 2nd , join us for a virtual presentation on disability sports and the Paralympics with the Bay Area Outreach and Recreation Program (BORP). This event will feature closed captioning and American Sign Language interpreters. Read more about the event and register online at the event listing . On July 8th, celebrate by watching a West African dance performance by Bronze Girl Productions, an inclusive dance company, at the Brentwood Community Center. You can read more at its event description.
In addition to these events, you can always access the library’s Online ASL Storytime with Ms. Amy and Online ASL Storytime with Ms. Elaine to enjoy stories, songs, and activities with full ASL interpretation.
You can learn more about what the Contra Costa Library is doing to remove barriers to access by visiting the library’s Accessibility page. Have you heard about our Lite Reads collection? This collection is geared towards new adult readers, providing them with popular titles and subjects written in simpler text. Lite Reads collections can be found at the Antioch, Brentwood, Concord, Hercules, and San Pablo branches. While not every branch has a Lite Reads section, readers can browse the titles in this collection in our online catalog, and have books delivered to any branch for their convenience.
