The Kensington Library is turning a new page. The more than 60-year-old building is closed for at least 18 months to undergo a $5.3 million top-to-bottom transformation.
As part of the Contra Costa County Library’s broader facilities improvement initiative, the ambitious project will tackle years of deferred maintenance while completely reimagining the space to better serve the community well into the future.
To ensure the library's longevity, the extensive renovation will feature both vital infrastructure updates and exciting new patron amenities, including:
- Modernized Infrastructure: A completely new all-electric, energy-efficient HVAC system, alongside comprehensive electrical and lighting upgrades.
- Enhanced Accessibility: New ADA-compliant bathrooms for both the public and staff, as well as general ADA improvements throughout the facility.
- Refreshed Interiors: Fresh carpeting, brand-new shelving, and energy-efficient windows.
- Better Spaces: An expanded staff area and the addition of two dedicated study pods for focused work.
- Outdoor Expansion: The construction of a beautiful new exterior deck behind the library, offering patrons a brand-new way to read, work, and enjoy the space.
Funding for the project is a collaborative effort, made possible by Measure X (the half-cent sales tax passed by voters in 2020) and dedicated Library funds.
While the long closure is a significant adjustment for the community, the wait will be well worth it. When the doors reopen, patrons will be welcomed into a completely modernized, fully accessible, and deeply refreshed space designed to serve Kensington for generations to come.
The exterior book drop will be locked during the closure. Library materials can be returned to any other Contra Costa County Library location.
All holds not picked up before the closure have been moved to the El Cerrito Library.
During the closure, patrons are encouraged to visit the nearby El Cerrito and San Pablo libraries. Community members can continue to place holds through the online catalog and select any branch for pickup. Digital resources, including e-books and streaming services, remain available 24/7 at ccclib.org.
