Newsletter Message for October 2026

My name is Amy Brunson, and I am the Deputy County Librarian for Public Services. I want to share some exciting news with you about the selected book for this year’s Read Contra Costa program.

Our featured selection is “The Girls Who Grew Big,” a brilliant novel by Oakland author Leila Mottley.

Born and raised in Oakland, California, Leila Mottley first captured national attention as the 2018 Oakland Youth Poet Laureate at just 16. Her bestselling debut novel, “Nightcrawling,” became an Oprah’s Book Club selection and earned a spot on the Booker Prize longlist—making her the youngest author ever nominated for the prestigious award. She is also an accomplished poet whose work includes the collection “woke up no light,” inspired in part by her background as a youth advocate, educator, and doula.

“The Girls Who Grew Big” follows a fierce, tight-knit group of outcast teenage mothers who nickname themselves "The Girls." Cast aside by their families, schools, and local community, these young women build a makeshift support system—raising their children together out of the back of a pickup truck and refusing to let society reduce them to mere statistics.

Read Contra Costa is the Library’s annual community reading program that encourages everyone in the county to come together, read the same book, and share their perspectives. It runs from October 1 through November 14.

Copies of the book are available now in hardcover, eBook, and eAudiobook formats. Visit ccclib.org to check out a copy, explore upcoming library events, and join the conversation.

Thank you to the Library Foundation of Contra Costa for helping to sponsor this program.

Sincerely,

Amy Brunson
Deputy County Librarian

Estimados lectores,

Atentamente,

Amy Brunson
