It’s been a very eventful 2023 and I can’t believe it is already over! I’m a big believer in taking some time at the end of each year to reflect and celebrate our accomplishments, of which there were many this year.
In 2023, we started planning for the construction of the new Bay Point Library, which will be part of a new mixed-use, high-density, transit-oriented development in Bay Point. The development will include retail space, 340 low-income housing units, and a new 21,000-square-foot library. We are working with Noll & Tam Architects to gather information from members of the community about what they would like in the new library. We received a $9.9 million grant from the State Library for the project which will go a long way to help us build a library that meets the needs of the Bay Point community.
For years we have been hearing from the community that we need to do a better job of promoting all the free resources the library offers. So, we launched our very first cable TV and streaming advertising campaign. The campaign's goal was to increase awareness about the many free digital resources we offer. We are thrilled with how it turned out and recently found out the ad won an award. We were awarded a 2023 Silver Davey Award in the commercial video campaign category for excellence in diversity, equity, & inclusion. The annual International Davey Awards honors the achievements of the “Creative Davids” who derive their strength from big ideas, rather than big budgets.
In 2023, we also celebrated the launch of the first countywide library foundation. The Library Foundation of Contra Costa (LFCC) was formed to support the Library’s need for more funding to support its mission and to address the equity gaps in funding that exist amongst its 26 branches. The LFCC will help build and refresh libraries, fund new technologies and digital resources, and provide additional program funding for people of all ages. And most recently, we introduced our new all-electric, early literacy van, the Rolling Reader! We are so excited that the van will be visiting our underserved communities and providing new books and take-home literacy activities for young children.
We are very proud of all we accomplished, and we are also excited to start working on several exciting new initiatives in 2024.
The Concord Library is the branch we chose to pilot self-service Sunday open hours in 2024. Patrons will have the opportunity to be pre-approved for badge entry access to the library using their library card and unique PIN number. We hope the success of the pilot will mean we can roll this service out to other libraries across the county. Stay tuned for more information about this project throughout the year.
We are also working to make it possible for patrons to renew their library accounts online. Currently, patrons with expired cards must come into the library to renew their cards in person. Online card renewal will remove this requirement for most cardholders and provide more opportunities for uninterrupted access to library materials.
We will also continue to address deferred maintenance at the Antioch, Kensington, Pinole and Ygnacio Valley libraries. We received funding from Measure X to address many of the most critical infrastructure needs including new roofs, new HVAC systems, and lighting and electrical upgrades.

La Biblioteca de Concord es la sucursal que elegimos para poner a prueba el horario de los Domingos de autoservicio en 2024. Los usuarios tendrán la oportunidad de recibir una aprobación previa para el acceso con credencial a la biblioteca utilizando su tarjeta de biblioteca y su clave de PIN. Esperamos que el éxito del piloto signifique que podamos implementar este servicio en otras bibliotecas de todo el condado. También continuaremos abordando el mantenimiento diferido en las bibliotecas de Antioch, Kensington, Pinole e Ygnacio Valley.
