The Pinole Library is set to begin a comprehensive infrastructure renovation project starting Sunday, March 1, 2026. The facility will close for approximately 11 months to address critical deferred maintenance and modernize the building’s infrastructure for the first time in decades.
The library building, which opened in 1974, requires extensive upgrades to ensure a safe and comfortable environment for the community. The renovations will include:
Climate Control: Full replacement of the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems with a new all-electric HVAC.
Infrastructure: Installation of a brand-new roof and a modernized electrical system.
Environment: Implementation of energy-efficient interior lighting and cleaner air technology.
Safety & Accessibility: Repaving and ADA improvements to the parking lot
“Pinole residents deserve a more modern state-of-the-art library, and this project will achieve this goal. We look forward to completing this project and opening a newer facility which better meets the needs of Pinole residents,” said District One County Supervisor John Gioia.
The project is made possible through a collaborative funding effort, including the County Library, County Measure X Sales Tax, California State Library Building Forward Grant, and the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (AB836 Clean Air Center Fund).
"This renovation is a vital investment in the future of Pinole," says County Librarian Alison McKee. "By addressing these long-standing maintenance needs, we aren't just fixing a building; we are transforming the patron experience. Visitors can look forward to a much more comfortable, reliable, and bright environment that better serves as a hub for learning and community connection."
The exterior book drop will be locked during the closure. Library materials can be returned to any other Contra Costa County Library location.
All holds not picked up by the end of business on Saturday, February 28, will be moved to the El Sobrante Library.
During the closure, patrons are encouraged to visit the nearby El Sobrante and Hercules libraries. Community members can continue to place holds through the online catalog and select any branch for pickup. Digital resources, including e-books and streaming services, remain available 24/7 at ccclib.org.
For account questions during the closure, please call (800) 984-4636.
