When we think of summer getaways, our minds often jump to long highway drives, packed airports, or far-off destinations. But some of the most rewarding adventures are waiting right here in our own backyard. This season, I’d like to invite you to take a "staycation" with us by visiting a few of the unique library branches that make up the Contra Costa County Library system.
While every branch shares our core commitment to accessible, welcoming service, each location has its own distinct personality, architectural charm, and unique local offerings. Exploring branches outside your usual routine is a fantastic way to uncover hidden gems across our county:
• Gardening & Sustainability: Planning to turn your yard or balcony into a green oasis? Drop by branches like Martinez, El Cerrito, Moraga, Oakley, or Ygnacio Valley to visit our Seed Libraries. You can pick up free fruit, vegetable, herb, or flower seeds—and even return harvested seeds at the end of the season to pay it forward.
• Beyond Books with the Library of Things: You don't need a heavy backpack to travel light. Head to your local branch to check out an Outdoor Explorer Backpack—complete with binoculars, nature guides, and an East Bay Regional Park pass—or borrow a Ukulele Kit, a C-PEN reader, or a California State Park Pass for your next weekend road trip.
• Cultural Journeys with Discover & Go: Want to extend your staycation to local museums and cultural landmarks? Log into your account online to reserve free or discounted passes through our Discover & Go program before you head out on your county tour.
• Explore a different vibe: Go see a bigger library like the Walnut Creek, San Ramon or Brentwood Library or visit one of the smaller ones like the quaint Crockett or Rodeo libraries.
Whether you're picking up holds, browsing a new language collection, or simply finding a quiet nook with free public Wi-Fi, there’s always something new to discover.
Next time you have a free afternoon, pick a neighborhood you haven't visited in a while, map out a branch stop, and come say hello. We can't wait to welcome you!
Warmly,
Alison McKee
County Librarian
La próxima vez que tengas una tarde libre, elige un vecindario que no hayas visitado desde hace tiempo, planifica una parada en una de nuestras sucursales y ven a saludarnos. Nos encantaria darte la bienvenida.
Muy cordialmente,
